Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner
What they do
- Diagnose patient conditions and their causes.
- Interview patients about symptoms and complaints, and determine whether a psychiatric disorder has a physiological or emotional basis.
- Screen patients for physical illness and analyze explanations for psychiatric illness, such as developmental issues, family dysfunction, genetic, neurological trauma or social or cultural problems.
- Assessment of risk factors for mental illness and broader wellness evaluations.
- Provide a range of therapies to patients in their car.
- Conduct individual, group, or family counseling sessions.
- Write prescriptions for psychotropic medications under the supervision of psychiatrists.
- Monitor medication use and document treatment results.
- Case management.
- Track patient progress and report their results to doctors.
- Work with other medical professionals to evaluate or change treatment plans.
- May conduct research, evaluate outcomes or provide peer review for scholarly publications.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN).
- Successful completion of NCLEX-RN.
- Masters in nursing (MSN).
- Completion of Doctoral Degree Program (DNP).
- Certification of psychiatric mental health.
- Worked a minimum ofhours with PMHNP program.
