What they do

  • Help patients with personal care and grooming, including bathing, dressing, toileting, hair care and skin care.
  • Assist patients with walking, transferring in and out of wheelchairs and changing position in bed.
  • Feed patients that cannot feed themselves.
  • Monitor patients' vital signs.
  • STNAs that work in patients' homes may also prepare meals and do light housekeeping tasks.
  • Provide companionship and emotional support.
  • Document the care they provide in patients' medical charts.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a course of education that includes classroom study and clinical work experience.
  • Certified or registered with the state in which you wish to work.
  • Completion of at leasthours of education.
  • Pass the state exam.
